Ever since the disputed June 12 elections in Iran became...well...disputed, I've been glued to the tube and other news outlets of all shapes and sizes for the latest on what many have dubbed the "Green Revolution."
For those who may not know, the election was highlighted by the reelection of incumbent (and nut job) President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and independent reformist candidate Mir-Hussein Mousavi. When it was announced that Ahmadinejad was the winner less than 24 hours after millions of votes had been supposedly counted, many Iranians took to the streets, chanting "where is my vote!" When the ruling clerics and the Supreme Leader himself endorsed Ahmadinejad's "victory," it effectively polarized the nation. Men and women of all ages are, as we speak, braving attempts by the government of Iran to silence the last vestiges of democracy in that nation. It is no longer about Mousavi and Ahmadinejad, but about the future of democracy and rule of law for the people of Iran.
I've not quite shown my own form of solidarity for the people of Iran, so I was compelled to draw this. This consists of one of my HL characters, Roxana Najibullah, a super powered Iranian, standing firm at the foot of Azadi Tower to protect protesters from the Basij Militia and other police who threaten the lives of the protesters.
Mashhad...? The hometown of Roxana, she is the daughter of Afghan refugees from the Soviet War in Afghanistan who sought peace from chaos and wound up in Iran.
The Farsi text underneath the drawing reads "Azadi", or the Persian word for freedom (Farsi speakers feel free to correct me if I have it wrong... )
